Investing.com -- Telecom major Reliance (NS: RELI ) Jio has filed a written complaint against rival telco Vodafone Idea (NS: VODA ) to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, for allegedly creating a ‘barrier’ and making it difficult for entry-level customers to port out to a different telecom provider.

Late last month, Vodafone (LON: VOD ) Idea and Bharti Airtel (NS: BRTI ) hiked their prepaid tariffs by 20-25%, with the entry-level plan for Vodafone Idea users starting from Rs 99. However, the lowest denomination plan of the telco that provides free outgoing SMS service starts from Rs 179, offering unlimited calling, 300 SMS and 2GB of data.

In Jio’s case, the lowest denomination prepaid plan with free SMS service starts from Rs 91 for 23 days, for non Jio Phone users.

In its letter addressed to Trai, Jio has alleged Vodafone Idea to hike the lowest prepaid pack with free SMS to a higher tariff plan of Rs 179 to restrict prepaid users from porting out of the network. To port to a different network, one needs to send an SMS from the existing network.

By placing the free SMS services to a higher tariff pack, customers will have to pay more to send an SMS, while lower-end customers may not want to buy the more expensive plan, and the ones already paid for the new plan would not want to shift to a new network, thereby barring customers willing to change networks.

Sources privy to the matter have informed that Trai is examining the issue. While its mode of action in the case is not known yet, the regulator will ensure the flexibility of choice for consumers.
