Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.00%, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.30%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 2.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 5.84% or 1.60 points to trade at 29.00 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 4.08% or 6.16 points to end at 157.24 and Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) was up 2.63% or 5.53 points to 215.44 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which lost 1.10% or 1.23 points to trade at 111.07 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 0.79% or 1.38 points to end at 172.29 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 0.31% or 0.48 points to 154.08.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which rose 12.40% to 8.34, Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ:AVGO) which was up 11.52% to settle at 812.73 and Arista Networks (NYSE:ANET) which gained 9.06% to close at 170.34.
The worst performers were Ulta Beauty Inc (NASDAQ:ULTA) which was down 13.37% to 420.27 in late trade, Kroger Company (NYSE:KR) which lost 3.25% to settle at 47.31 and Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES) which was down 3.06% to 68.69 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Verastem Inc (NASDAQ:VSTM) which rose 125.55% to 1.01, Elevation Oncology Inc (NASDAQ:ELEV) which was up 66.78% to settle at 5.02 and Presto Automation Inc (NASDAQ:PRST) which gained 63.93% to close at 3.59.
The worst performers were Canaan Inc (NASDAQ:CAN) which was down 26.74% to 1.89 in late trade, mCloud Technologies Corp (NASDAQ:MCLD) which lost 24.27% to settle at 0.54 and ROC Energy Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:ROC) which was down 22.73% to 8.16 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2045 to 935 and 105 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2247 rose and 1314 declined, while 185 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 6.22% to 17.95.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.16% or 3.05 to $1,946.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.35% or 0.97 to hit $72.80 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.04% or 0.79 to trade at $77.05 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.38% to 140.59.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.04% at 104.13.
