Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Utilities, Telecoms and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.13%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 0.79% or 0.79 points to trade at 100.41 at the close. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) added 0.70% or 0.31 points to end at 44.69 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.64% or 0.85 points to 134.05 in late trade.
Biggest losers included EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which lost 1.86% or 1.27 points to trade at 66.96 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 1.26% or 2.03 points to end at 159.22 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) shed 0.75% or 0.49 points to 65.03.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which rose 12.77% to 88.37, HP Inc (NYSE:HPQ) which was up 6.89% to settle at 13.04 and Patterson Companies Inc (NASDAQ:PDCO) which gained 5.87% to close at 48.19.
The worst performers were Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which was down 10.49% to 97.00 in late trade, CSRA Inc (NYSE:CSRA) which lost 5.73% to settle at 24.17 and Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 4.11% to 47.59 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Minerva Neu (NASDAQ:NERV) which rose 233.33% to 11.80, Flexion Theraptc (NASDAQ:FLXN) which was up 50.48% to settle at 17.23 and Peak Resorts Inc (NASDAQ:SKIS) which gained 27.00% to close at 4.28.
The worst performers were Ionis Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:IONS) which was down 39.42% to 21.36 in late trade, Paragon Shipping Inc (NASDAQ:PRGN) which lost 34.59% to settle at 1.0400 and Ovascience Inc (NASDAQ:OVAS) which was down 29.14% to 6.93 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1702 to 1612 and 27 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1424 fell and 1125 advanced, while 75 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.59% to 13.54 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.31% or 3.85 to $1219.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.46% or 0.23 to hit $49.33 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.66% or 0.33 to trade at $49.41 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.33% to 1.1191, while USD/JPY fell 0.36% to 109.78.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.25% at 95.16.
