U.S. shares mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.14%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Financials , Industrials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials , Oil & Gas and Telecoms sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.14% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.14%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.38%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD ), which rose 2.18% or 2.70 points to trade at 126.50 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ ) added 1.71% or 2.11 points to end at 125.25 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE: UNH ) was up 1.31% or 1.84 points to 142.59 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT ), which lost 1.61% or 0.87 points to trade at 53.09 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE: GS ) declined 1.18% or 1.92 points to end at 161.41 and EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE: DD ) shed 0.84% or 0.57 points to 67.49.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were F5 Networks Inc (NASDAQ: FFIV ) which rose 4.13% to 120.60, Comerica Incorporated (NYSE: CMA ) which was up 2.42% to settle at 44.79 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE: MCD ) which gained 2.18% to close at 126.50.

The worst performers were Netflix Inc (NASDAQ: NFLX ) which was down 13.13% to 85.84 in late trade, NRG Energy Inc (NYSE: NRG ) which lost 5.73% to settle at 14.64 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE: FCX ) which was down 5.25% to 12.45 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Golden Enterprises Inc (NASDAQ: GLDC ) which rose 58.40% to 11.880, Real Goods Solar Inc (NASDAQ: RGSE ) which was up 49.27% to settle at 8.2100 and Hudson Technologies Inc (NASDAQ: HDSN ) which gained 33.25% to close at 5.050.

The worst performers were Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ: SMCI ) which was down 27.79% to 19.02 in late trade, Siebert Financial Corp (NASDAQ: SIEB ) which lost 27.67% to settle at 1.150 and Ballard Power Systems Inc (NASDAQ: BLDP ) which was down 21.89% to 1.570 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1915 to 1354 and 39 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1636 fell and 930 advanced, while 76 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.46% to 12.01 a new 52-week low.

In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.26% or 3.50 to $1332.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.02% or 0.47 to hit $45.47 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.60% or 0.28 to trade at $46.68 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.51% to 1.1019, while USD/JPY fell 0.02% to 106.14.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.56% at 97.10.
