Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Oil & Gas and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.12% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index added 0.61%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.70%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 7.86% or 7.61 points to trade at 104.42 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) added 5.57% or 7.47 points to end at 141.70 and E I du Pont de Nemours & Co (NYSE:DD) was up 3.58% or 2.84 points to 82.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 0.74% or 0.35 points to trade at 46.70 in late trade. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) declined 0.39% or 0.17 points to end at 43.11 and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) shed 0.34% or 0.10 points to 29.45.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) which rose 7.86% to 104.42, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was up 7.11% to settle at 13.10 and Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT) which gained 6.98% to close at 171.46.
The worst performers were Ryder System Inc (NYSE:R) which was down 13.87% to 68.28 in late trade, Express Scripts Holding Co (NASDAQ:ESRX) which lost 10.77% to settle at 60.01 and T Rowe Price Group Inc (NASDAQ:TROW) which was down 4.19% to 69.59 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cleantech Solutions International Inc (NASDAQ:CLNT) which rose 30.81% to 4.500, China Auto Logistics Inc (NASDAQ:CALI) which was up 29.21% to settle at 3.450 and China Cmrcl (NASDAQ:CCCR) which gained 28.62% to close at 1.8200.
The worst performers were Contravir Pharmaceut (NASDAQ:CTRV) which was down 27.12% to 0.8600 in late trade, PhaseRx Inc (NASDAQ:PZRX) which lost 19.47% to settle at 1.53 and Heidrick & Struggles International (NASDAQ:HSII) which was down 17.76% to 22.00 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2151 to 1069 and 34 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1713 rose and 809 declined, while 84 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.18% to 10.82 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.98% or 12.57 to $1264.93 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.93% or 0.46 to hit $49.69 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.13% or 0.59 to trade at $52.72 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.63% to 1.0935, while USD/JPY rose 1.23% to 111.12.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.24% at 98.67.
