U.S. shares higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.74%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology , Consumer Services and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.74%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.64%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.92%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT ), which rose 1.85% or 1.05 points to trade at 57.95 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM ) added 1.81% or 2.79 points to end at 156.77 and Nike Inc (NYSE: NKE ) was up 1.75% or 0.95 points to 55.35 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS ), which lost 0.28% or 0.26 points to trade at 91.70 in late trade. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE: UTX ) added 0.07% or 0.07 points to end at 102.30 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL ) gained 0.19% or 0.21 points to 113.09.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were First Solar Inc (NASDAQ: FSLR ) which rose 4.94% to 39.09, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE: RCL ) which was up 4.76% to settle at 74.35 and Southwest Airlines Company (NYSE: LUV ) which gained 4.50% to close at 38.53.

The worst performers were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE: CHK ) which was down 5.89% to 6.230 in late trade, EQT Corporation (NYSE: EQT ) which lost 5.56% to settle at 68.64 and Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE: SWN ) which was down 4.23% to 13.13 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Real Goods Solar Inc (NASDAQ: RGSE ) which rose 110.94% to 5.5900, Allied Healthcare Products Inc (NASDAQ: AHPI ) which was up 20.97% to settle at 0.7500 and Durect Corporation (NASDAQ: DRRX ) which gained 19.83% to close at 1.390.

The worst performers were Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ: CZR ) which was down 18.92% to 7.670 in late trade, Tantech Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ: TANH ) which lost 15.38% to settle at 1.87 and Vanguard Natural Resources LLC (NASDAQ: VNR ) which was down 14.74% to 0.861 at the close.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1841 to 1336 and 82 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1598 rose and 915 declined, while 103 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 9.79% to 13.08.

In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.99% or 13.25 to $1330.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 2.98% or 1.37 to hit $44.56 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 3.15% or 1.51 to trade at $46.42 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.31% to 1.1219, while USD/JPY rose 0.04% to 100.37.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.15% at 95.35.
