Japan shares lower at close of trade; Nikkei 225 down 1.60%

Investing.com – Japan equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Shipbuilding , Transportation Equipment and Marine Transport sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 lost 1.60%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd. (T: 4568 ), which rose 5.64% or 309.0 points to trade at 5790.0 at the close. Kao Corp. (T: 4452 ) added 4.67% or 400.0 points to end at 8957.0 and NEC Corp. (T: 6701 ) was up 4.14% or 155.0 points to 3900.0 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. (T: 6976 ), which lost 14.48% or 389.0 points to trade at 2298.0 in late trade. Alps Electric Co., Ltd. (T: 6770 ) declined 10.65% or 250.0 points to end at 2097.0 and Chiyoda Corp. (T: 6366 ) shed 10.23% or 36.0 points to 316.0.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2087 to 1450 and 206 ended unchanged on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The Nikkei Volatility , which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was up 5.67% to 16.76.

In commodities trading, Crude oil for June delivery was up 0.02% or 0.01 to $62.26 a barrel. Meanwhile, Brent oil for delivery in July fell 0.29% or 0.21 to hit $71.03 a barrel, while the June Gold Futures contract rose 0.05% or 0.65 to trade at $1284.45 a troy ounce.

USD/JPY was down 0.10% to 110.64, while EUR/JPY rose 0.03% to 124.06.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.09% at 97.178.
