Japan shares higher at close of trade; Nikkei 225 up 0.04%

Investing.com – Japan equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Shipbuilding , Steel and Finance & Investment sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 rose 0.04% to hit a new 5-year high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were SUMCO Corp. (T: 3436 ), which rose 3.71% or 74.0 points to trade at 2069.0 at the close. Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co., Ltd. (T: 7735 ) added 3.00% or 245.0 points to end at 8420.0 and Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Ltd. (T: 1332 ) was up 2.73% or 18.0 points to 677.0 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. (T: 5706 ), which lost 2.38% or 135.0 points to trade at 5530.0 in late trade. Amada Co., Ltd. (T: 6113 ) declined 2.27% or 30.0 points to end at 1290.0 and Alps Electric Co., Ltd. (T: 6770 ) shed 2.19% or 70.0 points to 3120.0.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1888 to 1395 and 215 ended unchanged on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The Nikkei Volatility , which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was up 0.93% to 15.18.

In commodities trading, Crude oil for November delivery was down 0.12% or 0.06 to $51.23 a barrel. Meanwhile, Brent oil for delivery in December unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to hit $57.23 a barrel, while the December Gold Futures contract fell 0.57% or 7.29 to trade at $1282.71 a troy ounce.

USD/JPY was up 0.79% to 113.43, while EUR/JPY rose 0.38% to 133.89.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.44% at 93.41.
