Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.65%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Materials , Mining and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.65%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Mitel Networks Corporation (TO: MNW ), which rose 4.30% or 0.34 points to trade at 8.25 at the close. Badger Daylighting Ltd . (TO: BAD ) added 2.87% or 0.63 points to end at 22.59 and Manulife Financial Corporation (TO: MFC ) was up 2.64% or 0.48 points to 18.69 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Torex Gold Resources Inc . (TO: TXG ), which lost 10.33% or 0.220 points to trade at 1.910 in late trade. Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO: ELD ) declined 9.77% or 0.64 points to end at 5.91 and New Gold Inc . (TO: NGD ) shed 9.42% or 0.57 points to 5.48.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 557 to 253 and 96 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.79% to 15.39.

In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 1.45% or 18.55 to $1258.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.93% or 0.45 to hit $47.86 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 1.52% or 0.75 to trade at $48.53 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.90% to 0.7676, while CAD/EUR fell 0.09% to 0.6841.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.68% at 95.19.
