Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.62%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy , Mining and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.62%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Manitoba Telecom Services Inc . (TO: MBT ), which rose 15.26% or 5.01 points to trade at 37.85 at the close. Superior Plus Corp (TO: SPB ) added 7.14% or 0.78 points to end at 11.70 and Canfor Corporation (TO: CFP ) was up 5.10% or 0.70 points to 14.42 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO: PWT ), which lost 8.74% or 0.12 points to trade at 1.30 in late trade. Concordia Healthcare (TO: CXR ) declined 9.05% or 3.30 points to end at 33.18 and Kelt Exploration Ltd. (TO: KEL ) shed 7.23% or 0.35 points to 4.49.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 460 to 377 and 97 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.35% to 16.32.

In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 0.17% or 2.25 to $1292.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 2.13% or 0.98 to hit $44.94 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 3.08% or 1.46 to trade at $45.91 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.23% to 0.7984, while CAD/EUR fell 0.49% to 0.6924.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.49% at 92.56.
