Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.42%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Energy , Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.42%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Air Canada (TO: AC ), which rose 4.92% or 0.460 points to trade at 9.810 at the close. Methanex Corporation (TO: MX ) added 4.76% or 1.94 points to end at 42.72 and Brookfield Business Partners LP (TO: BBU_u ) was up 3.37% or 1.03 points to 31.58 in late trade.

Biggest losers included OceanaGold Corporation (TO: OGC ), which lost 14.01% or 0.660 points to trade at 4.050 in late trade. B2Gold Corp (TO: BTO ) declined 11.75% or 0.450 points to end at 3.380 and Asanko Gold Inc (TO: AKG ) shed 5.08% or 0.280 points to 5.230.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 649 to 497 and 135 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.43% to 14.62.

In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.99% or 13.25 to $1330.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 3.00% or 1.38 to hit $44.55 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 3.17% or 1.52 to trade at $46.41 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.15% to 0.7571, while CAD/EUR rose 0.45% to 0.6748.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.15% at 95.35.
