Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.41%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Consumer Discretionary , Consumer Staples and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.41%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd (TO: MDA ), which rose 8.42% or 5.35 points to trade at 68.89 at the close. Mitel Networks Corporation (TO: MNW ) added 5.81% or 0.58 points to end at 10.56 and Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd (TO: KL ) was up 5.78% or 0.720 points to 13.180 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO: ELD ), which lost 7.59% or 0.23 points to trade at 2.80 in late trade. Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO: CPG ) declined 4.35% or 0.45 points to end at 9.90 and Atco Ltd (TO: ACOx ) shed 3.94% or 1.96 points to 47.73.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 542 to 535 and 149 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 7.34% to 12.58.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.77% or 9.76 to $1269.76 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.47% or 0.72 to hit $49.76 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 2.12% or 1.09 to trade at $52.58 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 1.00% to 0.8045, while CAD/EUR rose 0.35% to 0.6845.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.66% at 93.15.
