Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.23% – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy , Healthcare and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.23%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO: FR ), which rose 8.65% or 0.84 points to trade at 10.55 at the close. IAMGold Corporation (TO: IMG ) added 6.71% or 0.23 points to end at 3.66 and Yamana Gold Inc (TO: YRI ) was up 5.92% or 0.29 points to 5.19 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Performance Sports Group Ltd (TO: PSG ), which lost 15.82% or 0.78 points to trade at 4.15 in late trade. Mitel Networks Corporation (TO: MNW ) declined 9.62% or 0.97 points to end at 9.11 and NuVista Energy Ltd . (TO: NVA ) shed 6.43% or 0.320 points to 4.660.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 736 to 580 and 350 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 6.31% to 16.17.

In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 0.75% or 9.20 to $1235.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 2.41% or 1.00 to hit $40.50 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 1.55% or 0.68 to trade at $43.16 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.19% to 0.7798, while CAD/EUR rose 0.04% to 0.6912.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.26% at 94.69.
