Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 1.57%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Energy , Consumer Discretionary and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.57%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Aphria Inc (TO: APHA ), which rose 48.40% or 2.420 points to trade at 7.420 at the close. Aurora Cannabis Inc (TO: ACB ) added 13.37% or 0.83 points to end at 7.04 and Canopy Growth Corp (TO: WEED ) was up 8.26% or 3.090 points to 40.510 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Dollarama Inc (TO: DOL ), which lost 11.80% or 4.46 points to trade at 33.33 in late trade. Canada Goose Holdings Inc (TO: GOOS ) declined 8.53% or 7.79 points to end at 83.54 and Cenovus Energy Inc (TO: CVE ) shed 7.76% or 0.86 points to 10.22.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 762 to 406 and 101 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 18.16% to 16.98.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.07% or 0.90 to $1243.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 2.25% or 1.19 to hit $51.70 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 2.10% or 1.29 to trade at $60.27 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.17% to 0.7475, while CAD/EUR fell 0.48% to 0.6568.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.31% at 96.710.
