Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 1.05%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Healthcare , Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.05% to hit a new 52-week low.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd (TO: TVE ), which rose 10.87% or 0.200 points to trade at 2.040 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TO: BTE ) added 8.50% or 0.17 points to end at 2.17 and Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TO: CPG ) was up 6.91% or 0.27 points to 4.18 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Home Capital Group Inc . (TO: HCG ), which lost 15.05% or 2.48 points to trade at 14.00 in late trade. Yamana Gold Inc (TO: YRI ) declined 9.72% or 0.31 points to end at 2.88 and First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO: FR ) shed 8.07% or 0.62 points to 7.06.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 770 to 388 and 101 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.34% to 20.07.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.59% or 7.45 to $1246.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.55% or 0.72 to hit $47.32 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.34% or 0.19 to trade at $56.45 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.22% to 0.7410, while CAD/EUR fell 0.28% to 0.6518.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.03% at 96.545.
