Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.42%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Healthcare , Telecoms and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.42%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were New Gold Inc (TO: NGD ), which rose 5.19% or 0.080 points to trade at 1.620 at the close. Precision Drilling Corporation (TO: PD ) added 5.00% or 0.13 points to end at 2.73 and Celestica Inc. (TO: CLS ) was up 4.46% or 0.49 points to 11.48 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Aphria Inc (TO: APHA ), which lost 9.85% or 1.215 points to trade at 11.115 in late trade. SNC-Lavalin Group Inc . (TO: SNC ) declined 7.38% or 2.71 points to end at 34.00 and Canopy Growth Corp (TO: WEED ) shed 5.11% or 3.080 points to 57.150.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 549 to 512 and 132 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 5.35% to 16.55.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.52% or 6.85 to $1311.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.64% or 0.34 to hit $52.38 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.98% or 0.61 to trade at $61.49 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.06% to 0.7516, while CAD/EUR rose 0.40% to 0.6664.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.45% at 96.852.
