Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.41%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Discretionary , Materials and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.41%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canopy Growth Corp (TO: WEED ), which rose 9.83% or 3.630 points to trade at 40.560 at the close. Stars Group Inc (TO: TSGI ) added 6.23% or 2.76 points to end at 47.07 and Aurora Cannabis Inc (TO: ACB ) was up 4.91% or 0.440 points to 9.400 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Corus Entertainment Inc (TO: CJRb ), which lost 9.75% or 0.50 points to trade at 4.63 in late trade. Element Fleet Management Corp (TO: EFN ) declined 7.43% or 0.46 points to end at 5.73 and Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers Inc . (TO: RBA ) shed 4.65% or 2.160 points to 44.300.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 645 to 472 and 118 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 0.29% to 14.04 a new 1-month high.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.51% or 6.40 to $1249.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.71% or 0.52 to hit $73.28 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $77.46 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.55% to 0.7536, while CAD/EUR rose 0.43% to 0.6517.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 95.03.
