Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.30%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Healthcare , Consumer Staples and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.30%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were New Gold Inc (TSX: NGD ), which rose 8.60% or 0.080 points to trade at 1.010 at the close. Eldorado Gold Corp (TSX: ELD ) added 5.65% or 0.38 points to end at 7.10 and Ero Copper Corp (TSX: ERO ) was up 5.05% or 1.05 points to 21.83 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Canopy Growth Corp (TSX: WEED ), which lost 7.61% or 4.390 points to trade at 53.280 in late trade. Brookfield Business Partners LP (TSX: BBU_u ) declined 5.90% or 3.21 points to end at 51.20 and Torex Gold Resources Inc (TSX: TXG ) shed 5.14% or 0.730 points to 13.480.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 536 to 497 and 133 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.51% to 11.43.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.45% or 6.30 to $1403.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.91% or 0.52 to hit $57.59 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.33% or 0.86 to trade at $65.31 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.24% to 0.7563, while CAD/EUR fell 0.88% to 0.6653.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.46% at 95.692.
