Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.24%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Materials , IT and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.24%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were NexGen Energy Ltd. (TSX: NXE ), which rose 9.49% or 0.150 points to trade at 1.730 at the close. NuVista Energy Ltd . (TSX: NVA ) added 6.01% or 0.110 points to end at 1.940 and Canopy Growth Corp (TSX: WEED ) was up 4.32% or 1.510 points to 36.450 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Eldorado Gold Corp (TSX: ELD ), which lost 5.60% or 0.72 points to trade at 12.14 in late trade. MAG Silver Corp (TSX: MAG ) declined 5.26% or 0.86 points to end at 15.50 and NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX: NG ) shed 5.10% or 0.48 points to 8.93.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 542 to 497 and 140 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.23% to 12.74.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.67% or 10.20 to $1515.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 0.71% or 0.40 to hit $56.70 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.10% or 0.67 to trade at $61.62 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.42% to 0.7591, while CAD/EUR rose 0.51% to 0.6884.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.01% at 98.377.
