Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.22%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Healthcare , Consumer Discretionary and IT sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.22%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were OceanaGold Corporation (TO: OGC ), which rose 9.98% or 0.400 points to trade at 4.410 at the close. Element Fleet Management Corp (TO: EFN ) added 7.63% or 0.56 points to end at 7.90 and Centerra Gold Inc (TO: CG ) was up 5.64% or 0.36 points to 6.74 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Spin Master Corp (TO: TOY ), which lost 10.65% or 4.53 points to trade at 38.00 in late trade. Alaris Royalty Corp . (TO: AD ) declined 5.93% or 1.270 points to end at 20.130 and Martinrea International Inc . (TO: MRE ) shed 4.91% or 0.66 points to 12.78.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 685 to 379 and 130 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.05% to 12.44.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.03% or 0.45 to $1286.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 0.16% or 0.09 to hit $56.50 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.08% or 0.05 to trade at $66.07 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.09% to 0.7438, while CAD/EUR rose 0.08% to 0.6642.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.79% at 97.565.
