Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.20%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy , Materials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.20%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd . (TSX: WFT ), which rose 5.35% or 2.85 points to trade at 56.17 at the close. Bombardier Inc (TSX: BBDb ) added 2.69% or 0.050 points to end at 1.910 and SNC-Lavalin Group Inc . (TSX: SNC ) was up 2.59% or 0.52 points to 20.59 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Ensign Energy Services Inc (TSX: ESI ), which lost 10.18% or 0.39 points to trade at 3.44 in late trade. Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX: BIR ) declined 6.17% or 0.15 points to end at 2.28 and Precision Drilling Corporation (TSX: PD ) shed 4.69% or 0.09 points to 1.83.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 652 to 381 and 124 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.26% to 11.71.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.79% or 11.90 to $1501.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 1.54% or 0.91 to hit $58.19 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.08% or 0.05 to trade at $63.68 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.01% to 0.7527, while CAD/EUR rose 0.02% to 0.6824.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.31% at 98.127.
