Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.92%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Materials , Energy and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.92%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Alacer Gold Corp (TO: ASR ), which rose 17.62% or 0.430 points to trade at 2.870 at the close. IAMGold Corporation (TO: IMG ) added 13.16% or 0.600 points to end at 5.160 and Pretium Resources Inc. (TO: PVG ) was up 12.34% or 1.50 points to 13.66 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Intertape Polymer Group Inc . (TO: ITP ), which lost 2.17% or 0.50 points to trade at 22.50 in late trade. Computer Modelling Group Ltd. (TO: CMG ) declined 2.04% or 0.20 points to end at 9.60 and West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd . (TO: WFT ) shed 2.03% or 1.17 points to 56.50.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 854 to 316 and 110 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 26.35% to 11.63.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 1.45% or 17.45 to $1220.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 2.58% or 1.23 to hit $48.95 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 2.04% or 1.04 to trade at $51.96 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 1.29% to 0.7514, while CAD/EUR rose 0.10% to 0.7003.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.21% at 100.39.
