Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.61%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Energy , Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.61% to hit a new 52-week high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Celestica Inc. (TO: CLS ), which rose 10.95% or 1.51 points to trade at 15.30 at the close. Tourmaline Oil Corp . (TO: TOU ) added 6.43% or 2.34 points to end at 38.73 and Gran Tierra Energy Inc . (TO: GTE ) was up 5.38% or 0.220 points to 4.310 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Intertain Group (TO: IT ), which lost 5.58% or 0.55 points to trade at 9.30 in late trade. OceanaGold Corporation (TO: OGC ) declined 3.46% or 0.150 points to end at 4.190 and Ensign Energy Services Inc . (TO: ESI ) shed 3.44% or 0.31 points to 8.69.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 678 to 457 and 139 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.37% to 12.76.

In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.00% or 0.05 to $1267.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.61% or 0.31 to hit $50.94 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.84% or 0.43 to trade at $51.81 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.77% to 0.7501, while CAD/EUR fell 0.42% to 0.6889.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.33% at 98.61.
