Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.61%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Healthcare , IT and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.61%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO: ELD ), which rose 6.34% or 0.09 points to trade at 1.51 at the close. Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (TO: VRX ) added 5.39% or 1.16 points to end at 22.68 and Dollarama Inc (TO: DOL ) was up 5.26% or 7.88 points to 157.61 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TO: AAV ), which lost 5.74% or 0.310 points to trade at 5.090 in late trade. Bonavista Energy Corp (TO: BNP ) declined 5.10% or 0.100 points to end at 1.860 and Enerplus Corporation (TO: ERF ) shed 4.34% or 0.51 points to 11.25.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 641 to 477 and 159 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.97% to 11.38.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 1.32% or 16.70 to $1249.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.16% or 0.65 to hit $56.61 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 1.49% or 0.91 to trade at $62.13 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.54% to 0.7779, while CAD/EUR fell 0.32% to 0.6608.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.25% at 93.76.
