Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.16%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Materials , IT and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.16%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Pretium Resources Inc. (TO: PVG ), which rose 6.51% or 0.85 points to trade at 13.91 at the close. Intertape Polymer Group Inc . (TO: ITP ) added 5.95% or 1.26 points to end at 22.45 and Interfor Corp (TO: IFP ) was up 5.76% or 1.25 points to 22.95 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Canopy Growth Corp (TO: WEED ), which lost 13.87% or 5.210 points to trade at 32.350 in late trade. Aphria Inc (TO: APH ) declined 12.31% or 2.530 points to end at 18.020 and First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO: FR ) shed 3.32% or 0.29 points to 8.45.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 624 to 525 and 131 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.51% to 11.67.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.26% or 16.70 to $1339.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.97% or 0.62 to hit $64.42 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.82% or 0.57 to trade at $69.83 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.39% to 0.8019, while CAD/EUR fell 0.96% to 0.6574.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.11% at 90.64.
