Brazil shares lower at close of trade; Bovespa down 2.93% – Brazil equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials , Industrials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Sao Paulo, the Bovespa lost 2.93% to hit a new 1-month low.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Bovespa were Marfrig Alimentos SA (SA: MRFG3 ), which rose 1.12% or 0.06 points to trade at 5.42 at the close. Suzano Papel e Celulose SA (SA: SUZB5 ) added 0.83% or 0.11 points to end at 13.43 and CPFL Energia SA (SA: CPFE3 ) was up 0.12% or 0.03 points to 25.62 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Metalurgica Gerdau SA (SA: GOAU4 ), which lost 9.22% or 0.53 points to trade at 5.22 in late trade. Cia Siderurgica Nacional SA (SA: CSNA3 ) declined 8.95% or 0.98 points to end at 9.97 and Bradespar SA (SA: BRAP4 ) shed 8.51% or 1.94 points to 20.86.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 287 to 74 and 28 ended unchanged on the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Brazil Etf Volatility , which measures the implied volatility of Bovespa options, was up 10.74% to 33.30.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.87% or 10.75 to $1244.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 1.23% or 0.60 to hit $48.31 a barrel, while the May US coffee C contract fell 0.34% or 0.50 to trade at $144.52 .

USD/BRL was up 0.39% to 3.0843, while EUR/BRL rose 1.12% to 3.3354.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.63% at 99.53.
