Australia shares higher at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 up 0.84%

Investing.com – Australia equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Metals & Mining , Resources and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 added 0.84%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Beach Energy Ltd (AX: BPT ), which rose 12.07% or 0.098 points to trade at 0.910 at the close. Syrah Resources Ltd (AX: SYR ) added 7.85% or 0.270 points to end at 3.710 and Western Areas Ltd (AX: WSA ) was up 7.31% or 0.190 points to 2.790 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Metcash Ltd (AX: MTS ), which lost 1.56% or 0.040 points to trade at 2.520 in late trade. Costa Group Holdings Ltd (AX: CGC ) declined 1.43% or 0.080 points to end at 5.500 and Star Entertainment Group Ltd (AX: SGR ) shed 1.34% or 0.070 points to 5.170.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 655 to 439 and 325 ended unchanged on the Sydney Stock Exchange.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 4.59% to 10.566 a new 6-month low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.63% or 8.15 to $1276.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.27% or 0.14 to hit $51.53 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.37% or 0.21 to trade at $56.58 a barrel.

AUD/USD was down 0.26% to 0.7816, while AUD/JPY rose 0.15% to 88.25.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.39% at 93.27.
