Reliance (NS:RELI) Jio, under the leadership of Mukesh Ambani, has urged the government to phase out 2G and 3G networks nationwide. This move, as proposed by the telecom giant, aims to streamline costs and facilitate a smooth transition of users to more advanced 4G and 5G networks. The proposal was made in response to a consultation paper titled 'Digital Transformation through 5G Ecosystem' issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Last year, TRAI initiated a consultation paper to tackle policy challenges and establish an effective framework for the rapid adoption and efficient utilization of new technologies.

In its response, Jio emphasized the need for a clear policy and roadmap for the complete shutdown of 2G and 3G networks. According to Jio, this action would help eliminate unnecessary network expenses and enable all customers to migrate to 4G and 5G services, thus fostering the development of a robust 5G ecosystem.

Highlighting the significance of 5G, Jio stated that it would play a pivotal role in driving digital transformation across various industries by providing faster, more reliable connectivity. With its superior data speeds, enhanced bandwidth, and lower latency, 5G is poised to empower businesses and innovators, facilitating the realization of their aspirations.

Vodafone Idea (NS:VODA) (VI) also weighed in on the matter, acknowledging that a significant portion of the population still relies on older technologies like 2G, which hampers their access to newer technologies such as 4G and 5G. VI highlighted the challenges associated with introducing 5G to low-income groups due to the prevalence of 2G/3G-enabled smartphones and the higher costs associated with 5G devices.

In summary, the telecommunications industry is at a crossroads, with players advocating for the phased-out transition to advanced networks while addressing the challenges faced by users with older technology access limitations.
