Market Turnover Soared 77% in 2024: HAL, Zomato, Tata Motors Lead

The Indian stock market experienced a phenomenal 77% growth in total turnover in 2024, with the top 10 traded securities accounting for 13% of the total volume. While their turnover grew by 39%, some stocks stood out with triple-digit gains, reflecting heightened investor interest.

Top Traded Securities: Hindustan Aeronautics (NSE:HIAE) & Zomato (NSE:ZOMT) Steal the Show

Among the most actively traded stocks, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Zomato emerged as the biggest winners, each recording over 100% turnover growth. Tata Motors (NSE:TAMO) followed closely, posting an 80% surge in trading activity. The rest of the top 10 securities saw turnover growth between 17% and 46%, solidifying their market dominance. Despite shifting volumes, HDFC Bank (NSE:HDBK), Reliance Industries (NSE:RELI), and ICICI Bank (NSE:ICBK) held their ranks from 2023, maintaining their influence in the market.

Stock Futures Turnover Surges 71%: HAL, Tata Motors, and HDFC Bank Shine

In stock futures trading, the top 10 most traded stocks contributed 23% of total turnover, growing at 71% YoY. HAL stood out with an explosive 183% turnover growth, while Tata Motors (92%) and HDFC Bank (80%) followed. Reliance Industries (54%) retained its strong position, while Axis Bank (NSE:AXBK), Kotak Mahindra Bank (NSE:KTKM), and Bajaj Finance (NSE:BJFN) each posted turnover growth between 45% and 50%.

Stock Options Trading: Major Reshuffle in Rankings

The stock options market saw a 55% increase in turnover within the top 10 traded securities, slightly lagging behind the overall market's 77% surge. Reliance Industries led the pack with a 57% rise, while HDFC Bank jumped from 5th place in 2023 to 2nd in 2024 with over 100% growth. However, Adani Enterprises (NSE:ADEL) witnessed a sharp 46% decline, dropping from 1st to 5th place.

A major highlight was the entry of Power Finance Corporation (NSE:PWFC), REC (NSE:RECM) Limited, and Dixon Technologies into the top 10, with triple-digit growth of 113%, 116%, and 180%, respectively, showcasing a shift in investor preference.
