By Malvika Gurung -- The online travel company MakeMyTrip Limited (NASDAQ: MMYT ) announced on Monday to partner with the Ministry of Civil Aviation to bolster and promote the connectivity of underserviced air routes through the UDAN scheme.

UDAN is a regional airport development program started by the Government of India to upgrade underserviced air routes, while making air travel more accessible and affordable to all, thereby boosting economic development.

Over the past four years, the UDAN scheme has connected major cities with regional hubs, and MakeMyTrip partnering with the aviation ministry will further market UDAN flights to a larger pool of audience through the diverse channels of the online travel company.

MakeMyTrip will market the UDAN flights on the AirSewa portal on its platform, online and through offline channels, using its vast network of franchise retail stores for offline booking. These will promote the UDAN flights and increase the section’s visibility and product discovery, to further increase focus on improving the air connectivity to underserved destinations.

According to the statement provided by the Minister of Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, there are 62 unserved and underserved airports currently, along with five heliports. Of these, 389 routes have successfully been added under the UDAN scheme.
