India shares lower at close of trade; Nifty 50 down 1.73%

Investing.com – India equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the IT , Technology and Banking sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 declined 1.73%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index declined 2.01%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were NTPC Ltd (NS: NTPC ), which rose 6.01% or 9.25 points to trade at 163.20 at the close. SBI Life Insurance Company Ltd (NS: SBIL ) added 2.31% or 26.50 points to end at 1,173.40 and HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd (NS: HDFL ) was up 1.70% or 9.60 points to 574.45 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Infosys Ltd (NS: INFY ), which lost 7.27% or 127.15 points to trade at 1,621.40 in late trade. Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NS: HDFC ) declined 4.83% or 115.00 points to end at 2,263.50 and HDFC Bank Ltd (NS: HDBK ) shed 4.74% or 69.50 points to 1,395.45.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were NTPC Ltd (BO: NTPC ) which rose 6.11% to 163.30, Tata Steel Ltd (BO: TISC ) which was up 1.51% to settle at 1,339.20 and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (BO: MRTI ) which gained 1.37% to close at 7,574.55.

The worst performers were Infosys Ltd (BO: INFY ) which was down 7.27% to 1,621.45 in late trade, Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd (BO: HDFC ) which lost 4.81% to settle at 2,263.05 and HDFC Bank Ltd (BO: HDBK ) which was down 4.74% to 1,395.35 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1133 to 722 and 44 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1973 fell and 1429 advanced, while 143 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.

The India VIX , which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 8.72% to 19.33.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.76% or 15.05 to $1,989.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.24% or 0.26 to hit $106.12 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.15% or 0.17 to trade at $111.53 a barrel.

USD/INR was down 0.08% to 76.27, while EUR/INR fell 0.12% to 82.36.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.33% at 100.65.
