Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 1.04%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy , REITs and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 1.04% to hit a new 3-month low.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Shopify Inc (TSX: SHOP ), which rose 4.89% or 54.32 points to trade at 1164.72 at the close. WELL Health Technologies Corp (TSX: WELL ) added 3.85% or 0.160 points to end at 4.320 and Bombardier Inc (TSX: BBDb ) was up 3.23% or 0.050 points to 1.600 in late trade.

Biggest losers included First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX: FR ), which lost 6.27% or 0.87 points to trade at 13.00 in late trade. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX: FM ) declined 5.09% or 1.71 points to end at 31.91 and Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TSX: FVI ) shed 4.74% or 0.22 points to 4.42.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 943 to 188 and 65 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.63% to 25.39 a new 3-year high.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.36% or 6.55 to $1838.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 1.98% or 1.69 to hit $83.45 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 1.67% or 1.45 to trade at $85.63 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.42% to 0.7912, while CAD/EUR fell 0.22% to 0.6989.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.28% at 95.900.
