Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.78%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the IT , Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.78%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX: VET ), which rose 11.14% or 0.43 points to trade at 4.29 at the close. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX: FM ) added 9.09% or 1.19 points to end at 14.28 and Enerplus Corporation (TSX: ERF ) was up 7.14% or 0.18 points to 2.70 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Shopify Inc (TSX: SHOP ), which lost 4.92% or 60.37 points to trade at 1166.53 in late trade. BRP Inc (TSX: DOO ) declined 4.80% or 3.41 points to end at 67.56 and OceanaGold Corporation (TSX: OGC ) shed 3.83% or 0.110 points to 2.760.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 570 to 481 and 124 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.01% or 0.25 to $1966.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 5.15% or 1.97 to hit $40.25 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 4.44% or 1.80 to trade at $42.33 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.13% to 0.7592, while CAD/EUR rose 0.50% to 0.6433.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.12% at 93.195.
