Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.65%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the IT , REITs and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.65%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Tilray Inc (TSX: TLRY ), which rose 3.88% or 0.34 points to trade at 9.10 at the close. TransAlta Corp (TSX: TA ) added 3.75% or 0.49 points to end at 13.56 and Boralex Inc (TSX: BLX ) was up 3.06% or 1.23 points to 41.43 in late trade.

Biggest losers included goeasy Ltd (TSX: GSY ), which lost 8.82% or 12.02 points to trade at 124.23 in late trade. Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX: LSPD ) declined 7.46% or 2.96 points to end at 36.74 and Shopify Inc (TSX: SHOP ) shed 6.38% or 56.05 points to 822.42.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 766 to 283 and 103 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 6.87% to 15.71.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.12% or 2.40 to $1,925.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 4.89% or 4.99 to hit $96.97 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 4.57% or 4.87 to trade at $101.77 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.37% to 0.80, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.29% to 0.73.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.22% at 99.65.
