Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.61%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy , Consumer Staples and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.61%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were New Gold Inc (TSX: NGD ), which rose 5.48% or 0.080 points to trade at 1.540 at the close. Methanex Corporation (TSX: MX ) added 4.36% or 2.30 points to end at 55.08 and Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX: BLDP ) was up 3.91% or 0.75 points to 19.95 in late trade.

Biggest losers included NexGen Energy Ltd. (TSX: NXE ), which lost 9.38% or 0.685 points to trade at 6.615 in late trade. Denison Mines Corp (TSX: DML ) declined 7.41% or 0.16 points to end at 2.00 and Cameco Corp (TSX: CCO ) shed 6.63% or 2.02 points to 28.45.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 608 to 367 and 122 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.20% or 3.60 to $1753.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.73% or 0.53 to hit $72.03 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.36% or 0.27 to trade at $75.40 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.46% to 0.7847, while CAD/EUR fell 0.13% to 0.6690.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.26% at 93.162.
