Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.50%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the IT , Industrials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.50%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Lithium Americas Corp (TSX: LAC ), which rose 5.30% or 2.25 points to trade at 44.74 at the close. OrganiGram Holdings Inc (TSX: OGI ) added 3.94% or 0.10 points to end at 2.64 and MEG Energy Corp (TSX: MEG ) was up 3.75% or 0.44 points to 12.18 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Nuvei Corp (TSX: NVEI ), which lost 35.50% or 43.57 points to trade at 79.16 in late trade. Enghouse Systems Ltd (TSX: ENGH ) declined 6.26% or 3.37 points to end at 50.45 and Real Matters Inc (TSX: REAL ) shed 5.11% or 0.44 points to 8.26.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 541 to 457 and 114 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.61% to 14.72.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.10% or 1.80 to $1786.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.62% or 0.45 to hit $72.50 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.69% or 0.52 to trade at $75.96 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.06% to 0.7905, while CAD/EUR fell 0.75% to 0.6967.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.50% at 95.890.
