Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.50%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Energy , Materials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.50%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BlackBerry Ltd (TSX: BB ), which rose 5.15% or 0.77 points to trade at 15.71 at the close. Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX: BEP_u ) added 4.53% or 2.08 points to end at 48.01 and Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX: BLDP ) was up 3.73% or 0.83 points to 23.08 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Sandstorm Gold Ltd . (TSX: SSL ), which lost 8.73% or 0.87 points to trade at 9.09 in late trade. Trillium Therapeutics Inc (TSX: TRIL ) declined 6.20% or 0.81 points to end at 12.25 and Enerplus Corporation (TSX: ERF ) shed 6.07% or 0.56 points to 8.66.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 609 to 412 and 97 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.09% or 1.55 to $1779.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.53% or 1.13 to hit $72.92 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.64% or 1.24 to trade at $74.14 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.40% to 0.8101, while CAD/EUR fell 0.28% to 0.6794.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 91.885.
