Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.45%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Energy , Financials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.45%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX: NG ), which rose 6.02% or 0.75 points to trade at 13.21 at the close. Eldorado Gold Corp (TSX: ELD ) added 5.68% or 0.76 points to end at 14.13 and Alamos Gold Inc (TSX: AGI ) was up 5.24% or 0.69 points to 13.85 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Enerplus Corporation (TSX: ERF ), which lost 6.96% or 0.24 points to trade at 3.21 in late trade. Seven Generations Energy Ltd (TSX: VII ) declined 6.35% or 0.23 points to end at 3.39 and Methanex Corporation (TSX: MX ) shed 5.90% or 1.61 points to 25.70.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 589 to 447 and 98 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.83% or 14.85 to $1808.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.71% or 0.29 to hit $40.34 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.70% or 0.30 to trade at $42.80 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.46% to 0.7352, while CAD/EUR fell 0.11% to 0.6523.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.26% at 96.933.
