Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.25%

Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the IT , Financials and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.25%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TSX: TRQ ), which rose 16.92% or 0.110 points to trade at 0.760 at the close. Tourmaline Oil Corp . (TSX: TOU ) added 4.12% or 0.53 points to end at 13.40 and NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX: NG ) was up 3.36% or 0.31 points to 9.54 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Eldorado Gold Corp (TSX: ELD ), which lost 7.17% or 0.75 points to trade at 9.71 in late trade. Canadian Western Bank (TSX: CWB ) declined 6.88% or 2.44 points to end at 33.04 and Canadian Imperial Bank Of Commerce (TSX: CM ) shed 5.18% or 5.95 points to 108.88.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 541 to 511 and 130 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.84% to 11.72.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.04% or 0.65 to $1480.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.03% or 0.02 to hit $58.45 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.70% or 0.44 to trade at $63.44 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.22% to 0.7591, while CAD/EUR fell 0.01% to 0.6835.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.26% at 97.345.
