Canada shares lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.05%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Materials , Telecoms and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.05%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX: BLDP ), which rose 8.06% or 2.16 points to trade at 28.95 at the close. Interfor Corp (TSX: IFP ) added 7.12% or 1.85 points to end at 27.85 and Canfor Corporation (TSX: CFP ) was up 5.35% or 1.33 points to 26.19 in late trade.

Biggest losers included New Gold Inc (TSX: NGD ), which lost 7.35% or 0.150 points to trade at 1.890 in late trade. B2Gold Corp (TSX: BTO ) declined 7.11% or 0.41 points to end at 5.29 and NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX: NG ) shed 5.82% or 0.67 points to 10.84.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 549 to 515 and 99 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.81% or 30.95 to $1683.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 1.87% or 1.15 to hit $60.41 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 1.39% or 0.90 to trade at $64.02 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.28% to 0.7920, while CAD/EUR rose 0.10% to 0.6756.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.36% at 93.287.
