Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 1.78%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy , Consumer Discretionary and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 1.78%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TSX: AAV ), which rose 13.35% or 1.02 points to trade at 8.66 at the close. Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX: CPG ) added 13.07% or 1.09 points to end at 9.43 and Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX: VET ) was up 12.65% or 2.96 points to 26.36 in late trade.

Biggest losers included New Gold Inc (TSX: NGD ), which lost 2.76% or 0.04 points to trade at 1.41 in late trade. Quebecor Inc Class B (TSX: QBRb ) declined 1.87% or 0.53 points to end at 27.85 and Shaw Communications Inc Class B (TSX: SJRb ) shed 1.49% or 0.55 points to 36.43.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 772 to 233 and 90 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.92% to 22.31.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.17% or 2.95 to $1,739.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 3.81% or 3.75 to hit $102.28 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 3.46% or 3.48 to trade at $104.17 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.49% to 0.77, while CAD/EUR rose 0.73% to 0.76.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 106.91.
