Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 1.57%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Healthcare , Industrials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.57%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were CAE Inc. (TSX: CAE ), which rose 13.63% or 4.59 points to trade at 38.27 at the close. Sprott Inc . (TSX: SII ) added 7.04% or 3.12 points to end at 47.42 and BlackBerry Ltd (TSX: BB ) was up 6.92% or 0.89 points to 13.76 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Cargojet Inc (TSX: CJT ), which lost 8.62% or 16.47 points to trade at 174.60 in late trade. First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX: FR ) declined 6.50% or 1.49 points to end at 21.45 and Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TSX: FVI ) shed 5.33% or 0.51 points to 9.06.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 719 to 346 and 95 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.57% or 9.85 to $1718.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 1.43% or 0.88 to hit $60.62 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 1.07% or 0.69 to trade at $63.73 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.65% to 0.7902, while CAD/EUR rose 0.94% to 0.6561.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.22% at 91.078.
