Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 1.20%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Healthcare , Consumer Discretionary and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.20%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canopy Growth Corp (TSX: WEED ), which rose 7.98% or 1.520 points to trade at 20.575 at the close. Sleep Country Canada Holdings Inc (TSX: ZZZ ) added 7.53% or 1.48 points to end at 21.13 and Lightspeed POS Inc (TSX: LSPD ) was up 6.73% or 2.98 points to 47.27 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Maple Leaf Foods Inc . (TSX: MFI ), which lost 4.89% or 1.29 points to trade at 25.09 in late trade. Eldorado Gold Corp (TSX: ELD ) declined 3.42% or 0.51 points to end at 14.40 and Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX: WDO ) shed 3.00% or 0.39 points to 12.61.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 717 to 346 and 109 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.93% or 17.75 to $1891.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 1.67% or 0.68 to hit $39.99 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 1.36% or 0.58 to trade at $42.07 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.35% to 0.7539, while CAD/EUR rose 0.09% to 0.6407.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.07% at 93.680.
