Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 1.17%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare , Consumer Discretionary and IT sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 1.17%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Denison Mines Corp (TSX: DML ), which rose 10.17% or 0.12 points to trade at 1.30 at the close. Air Canada (TSX: AC ) added 7.51% or 1.76 points to end at 25.20 and BlackBerry Ltd (TSX: BB ) was up 7.22% or 0.91 points to 13.52 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TSX: FVI ), which lost 5.81% or 0.34 points to trade at 5.51 in late trade. Westshore Terminals Investment Corp (TSX: WTE ) declined 3.13% or 0.55 points to end at 17.04 and MAG Silver Corp (TSX: MAG ) shed 1.54% or 0.35 points to 22.38.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 713 to 292 and 111 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.01% or 0.15 to $1809.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.73% or 1.15 to hit $67.50 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.56% or 1.07 to trade at $69.69 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.58% to 0.7887, while CAD/EUR rose 0.73% to 0.6694.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.07% at 92.963.
