Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 1.05%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy , Consumer Discretionary and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.05% to hit a new 1-month high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Baytex Energy Corp (TSX: BTE ), which rose 34.09% or 0.150 points to trade at 0.590 at the close. MTY Food Group Inc (TSX: MTY ) added 11.13% or 2.80 points to end at 27.95 and Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX: CPG ) was up 11.06% or 0.22 points to 2.21 in late trade.

Biggest losers included SSR Mining Inc (TSX: SSRM ), which lost 8.62% or 2.40 points to trade at 25.43 in late trade. Alacer Gold Corp (TSX: ASR ) declined 8.37% or 0.75 points to end at 8.21 and Pan American Silver Corp (TSX: PAAS ) shed 7.16% or 2.96 points to 38.36.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 649 to 404 and 82 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.99% or 17.35 to $1732.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 4.18% or 1.48 to hit $36.92 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 3.52% or 1.35 to trade at $39.67 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.41% to 0.7397, while CAD/EUR rose 0.15% to 0.6625.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.13% at 97.692.
