Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.78%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare , Energy and REITs sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.78%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX: BHC ), which rose 7.75% or 2.59 points to trade at 36.03 at the close. Interfor Corp (TSX: IFP ) added 5.22% or 1.44 points to end at 29.00 and Brookfield Asset Management Inc (TSX: BAMa ) was up 4.71% or 3.16 points to 70.23 in late trade.

Biggest losers included New Gold Inc (TSX: NGD ), which lost 3.00% or 0.045 points to trade at 1.455 in late trade. Saputo Inc (TSX: SAP ) declined 2.59% or 0.86 points to end at 32.29 and Teck Resources Ltd B (TSX: TECKb ) shed 2.51% or 0.77 points to 29.93.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 629 to 381 and 108 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.68% or 11.95 to $1775.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.87% or 0.61 to hit $70.75 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.91% or 0.67 to trade at $74.59 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.08% to 0.7804, while CAD/EUR rose 0.10% to 0.6654.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 93.177.
