Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.69%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare , Energy and IT sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.69%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Precision Drilling Corporation (TSX: PD ), which rose 8.69% or 5.46 points to trade at 68.28 at the close. Tilray Inc (TSX: TLRY ) added 8.31% or 0.28 points to end at 3.65 and Canopy Growth Corp (TSX: WEED ) was up 7.54% or 0.19 points to 2.71 in late trade.

Biggest losers included First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX: FR ), which lost 22.40% or 2.28 points to trade at 7.90 in late trade. Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TSX: FVI ) declined 6.22% or 0.30 points to end at 4.52 and Sandstorm Gold Ltd . (TSX: SSL ) shed 5.55% or 0.45 points to 7.66.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 626 to 370 and 82 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.23% to 18.88.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.98% or 39.20 to $1,943.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 2.52% or 1.71 to hit $69.53 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.05% or 0.04 to trade at $75.12 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.04% to 0.68.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 102.85.
