Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.67%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Materials , Clean Technology and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.67% to hit a new 3-month high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Silvercorp Metals Inc (TSX: SVM ), which rose 9.74% or 0.80 points to trade at 9.01 at the close. Teranga Gold Corp (TSX: TGZ ) added 5.76% or 0.75 points to end at 13.76 and Cogeco Communications Inc (TSX: CCA ) was up 5.43% or 5.40 points to 104.77 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX: CPG ), which lost 4.95% or 0.11 points to trade at 2.11 in late trade. Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX: VET ) declined 4.29% or 0.27 points to end at 6.02 and Pason Systems Inc . (TSX: PSI ) shed 3.47% or 0.25 points to 6.95.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 543 to 506 and 86 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.67% or 12.05 to $1812.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.34% or 0.14 to hit $40.61 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.60% or 0.26 to trade at $43.11 a barrel.

CAD/USD was down 0.08% to 0.7361, while CAD/EUR fell 0.52% to 0.6438.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.42% at 95.915.
