Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.59% – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Materials , Energy and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.59%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Kinross Gold Corporation (TSX: K ), which rose 7.47% or 0.82 points to trade at 11.80 at the close. MAG Silver Corp (TSX: MAG ) added 7.12% or 1.37 points to end at 20.61 and Teranga Gold Corp (TSX: TGZ ) was up 6.73% or 0.87 points to 13.79 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Aphria Inc (TSX: APHA ), which lost 5.23% or 0.310 points to trade at 5.620 in late trade. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX: BLDP ) declined 4.95% or 0.99 points to end at 18.99 and Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (TSX: GC ) shed 3.61% or 0.86 points to 22.95.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 534 to 527 and 112 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.36% or 6.65 to $1875.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 0.60% or 0.24 to hit $40.17 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.05% or 0.02 to trade at $41.75 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.27% to 0.7490, while CAD/EUR rose 0.20% to 0.6417.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.09% at 94.358.
