Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.34%
Credit: © Reuters. – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Consumer Staples , Energy and Financials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.34%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX: BIR ), which rose 5.52% or 0.360 points to trade at 6.880 at the close. Loblaw Companies Limited (TSX: L ) added 3.71% or 3.62 points to end at 101.22 and Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd (TSX: TVE ) was up 3.61% or 0.180 points to 5.170 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Dye & Durham Ltd (TSX: DND ), which lost 15.23% or 5.56 points to trade at 30.94 in late trade. Shopify Inc (TSX: SHOP ) declined 9.66% or 120.46 points to end at 1127.16 and Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX: LSPD ) shed 7.30% or 3.21 points to 40.74.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 516 to 501 and 112 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 18.91% to 25.72.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.35% or 6.25 to $1807.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.11% or 0.10 to hit $88.30 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.43% or 0.38 to trade at $89.54 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.29% to 0.7903, while CAD/EUR fell 0.06% to 0.6985.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.49% at 95.903.
